Panthers produce second half magic!

10/03/19

Swarbrick leads the Panthers in unbelievable fight back.

On a wet and very windy morning in Warrington the Panthers U13's were set to face their toughest test to date in the shape of Rylands Sharks. Summer rugby is yet to arrive in 2019 and the pitch and weather conditions today were extremely challenging for both teams. Playing into the wind in the first half the Panthers struggled to get out of first gear. Missed tackles, errors early in the tackle count and the ball not going 10m from the restart were just some of the reasons the Panthers were  12-0 down to the Sharks inside of as many minutes, to compound that further team captain Deacon Swarbrick was sin binned by the referee and the Panthers were looking really up against it. The message was simple, dig in, keep going, when we have the ball lets play at a high tempo and finish as far down the pitch as we can. For the remainder of the first half the Panthers who were down to 12 men continued to struggle and at Half Time the score was 20-0 in the favour of the home team. Ordinarily, you might think that a stern talking to was going to be on the cards, but the players just needed to focus on the task at hand, forget the scoreboard and play with some pace, remain calm and stick to what they have practiced and understand that if the opposition have scored 20 points in one half then so could the Panthers. The second half started and Deacon Swarbrick returned to the field of play after his spell on the sideline, what happened next you could probably only write in a Hollywood movie. Inspired by his time off the pitch Swarbrick ran with pace and power to open the scoring for the Panthers in the first set of six, with Wilding converting to make the score 20-6. The Panthers then started to play with some belief and passion which resulted in Swarbrick going in for his second. Huge runs from Cardoza, McConnell, Laybats and Glew, along with the fleet footed Pilkington were starting to take their toll on the home team and as the tempo increased the Panthers crossed again with Swarbrick bagging his third, Wilding converting to take the score to 20-16. The wind was wreaking havoc from the restarts and Woodward had to be faultless under the ball and he was on several occasions, claiming it superbly before returning it with interest to give the Panthers a great platform to start again. As the Panthers pushed on completing sets and working their way down the pitch Sherrington hit Swarbrick from close range with a long ball from dummy half to give Swarbrick his fourth of the morning to level the scores at 20-20. The Panthers were now in top gear and could smell a win from the most unlikely of positions at half time. Again Woodward was under huge pressure from the restart but did what he needed to before Glew and Cardoza set a platform for the Panthers to attack the Sharks right edge. Quick ball allowed Bolton to attack the line before producing a sublime one handed offload to the supporting Swarbrick who came on a great short line to race away 50m and put the ball under the posts and to complete his tally of 5 tries on the morning, Wilding converting to make the score 20-26 to the Panthers with 9 minutes to play!! The game continued with the Panthers unlucky not to stretch their lead further, before the Sharks gave them a fright scoring on the very last play of the game, but with the conversion unsuccessful the referee blew his whistle to confirm full time and put an end to what was a miraculous second 25 minutes from the Panthers. Each and everyone one of them should be extremely proud of their efforts today and whilst Swarbrick bagged five tries the overall team performance in the second half was superb on every level and without that collective application, desire and belief none of the points would have been scored.
