U11's play some scintillating attacking rugby on a sunny morning at Panther Park

An early morning kick off for the Panthers normally means one thing, a slow start and a kick up the backside to bring them around, today however was totally different. The first two sets from each side were as strong as you could get, no mistakes with the ball and an even contest in the middle of the park. With both teams starting strong and completing their sets it was a tight opening, but it was Chorley who opened the scoring.  A strong carry from Harrison who pulled the defence to the left of the pitch before the ball being moved out in the next play, now depending which move is called depends which way we attack, the boys either go to Jake or out the back and along the line,  is that Bob or Fred? I have no idea but it’s one of the two. For those who have no idea what I’m talking about the boys have been practicing two new moves in training and today is the first time they have been used.  Back to the try……..the ball was moved out and down the line to Andrew who finished off a brilliant team try.  And if something works why not try it again? So we did in our next set and we made good yards down field scattering their defence, now in this heat that makes a huge difference.  A defence not set is there for the taking and the Panther’s second try came as a direct result.  Playing with their heads up and eyes open we soon spotted we had an overlap to our left and rather than kick on the last the Panthers moved the ball through the hands and it was Deacon who took full advantage, and he  takes some stopping from that distance.  Full of confidence, the new plays working and the passes sticking the Panthers saw an opportunity to unleash their skills, yet again the new moves worked and we made yards down field, this time it was William who saw an opportunity and took full advantage, dancing his way through their defence and showing good footwork before offloading to the supporting Callum who literally just had to catch and fall over the line.  With grinning faces and back slaps I think the boys would have taken this score and performance at half time, but we soon had the ball back and why change something that has worked so well? So in our final set we did the same as our opening set and for the risk of repeating myself the boys called the move and it was a mirror image of our opening try, Harrison took it in, followed by either the ball being moved to the lead runner or out the back and along the line, and it was Andrew who finished the scoring for the half in the right corner and bring the half time score to 24 – 0

The second half was always going to be tough, and the burning question was could we play as well? And then take into account the heat sapping the energy levels it was always going to be a tough ask. It was Golborne who opened the scoring in the second half from a neat kick on the last play, a move that they looked to have been practising as it wasn’t the first time they had tried it. Walking back to the restart I was paying close attention to what was being said and it was encouraging to hear the talk, cut out the miss tackles and concentrate, not long ago it would have been the number of planes in the sky or what they was having for dinner! The Panthers soon got back into their rhythm and knew what they needed to do, communication is key and so it proved.  The move was called and they all knew what and where to go, Andrew finished off the latest move in the corner but this one took some finishing and one thing Andrew knows is how to finish.  The game  now into its final quarter and it was Deacon who took full advantage of some tiring Golborne defence, he cut his way through scoring the next two Panthers try’s. The last five minutes and the pace had dropped off massively, both teams looked tired and I think both would gladly have taken the final whistle. But still time for one last attack from Chorley and one last time to move the ball around and we quickly worked our way deep into Golborne half, and just as we started the game we ended it by backing our ability and the final try was scored through Jake who wriggled over from short distance.
